The 5 Best Dog Parks in San Francisco

City living can often mean limited space for your furry family members. Especially if you live in an apartment or don't have a yard where they can get some exercise and fresh air. Just like kids need playgrounds, dogs need dog parks - for their health, wellbeing, and most importantly, for their social life.

While there are plenty of places in San Francisco to take your dog, we've gone ahead and compiled a list of the five best dog parks in San Francisco to give your dog room to roam and play, and maybe even to find a few new friends in.

Pick one and head out with your pooch - don't forget to pack the poop bags - because it's time for waaaaaalkies!

1. Crissy Field Dog Park

1199 E Beach, San Francisco, CA, US, 94123

Stroll the promenade, throw some frisbee in the grassy areas, or enjoy the sand and surf along the designated off-leash part of the shoreline (always be sure to check signage or the official Crissy Field Dog Walking Map for the do and don't areas, and other rules around wildlife protection).

Dogs can enjoy a doggie water fountain while owners can enjoy the picnic tables provided.

2. Fort Funston Doggie Beach

500 Skyline Blvd, San Francisco, CA, US, 94132

Technically this one is not a park, but a beach - a dog-friendly beach! Enjoy this stretch of rugged headlands just south of Ocean Beach for a day of fun with your fluffy friend. Largely considered one of the best places to bring your dog in San Francisco, this beach will exhaust even the most energetic of pups.

While most of the dogs you see at Fort Funston will probably be running free, always check the leash rules ahead of time and arm yourself with baggies to leave the area as you found it.

3. Lafayette Park

Gough St & Sacramento St, San Francisco, CA 94109

Over in Pacific Heights, you'll find plenty of canine activity in Lafayette Park, as well as great house stalking with some of the fanciest real estate in town surrounding the park. While this is a super popular park for dog owners, please note that it's located on a pretty steep slope with sometimes heavy traffic nearby so use extra caution.

Lafayette Park is also good for low-key celeb spotting.

4. Duboce Park

Duboce St & Scott St, San Francisco, CA 94114

With an expansive off-leash area, spanning a full city block all the way down to Steiner Street, and plenty of places to grab a coffee nearby to enjoy while your pooch has a blast. Good neighborhood crowd and lotsssss of dogs.

Heads up: it can get quite busy and also has an unfenced side so if your dog has a tendency to bolt - this may not be the park for you.

5. Stern Grove Dog Park

100 Vale Ave, San Francisco, CA 94132

Stern Grove Dog Park and Play Area is a haven for dog owners in the Bay Area. There's plenty of off-leash areas for your pup to roam free in the dog park, and great walking trails and loops, and picnic tables, for two-legged folk in the larger areas where dogs should be on leash.
