What Is a Modular Home?

When it comes to modular homes, there's more than meets the eye. This article will outline the pros, cons, and everything else you need to know.

What is a modular home?

And why should you consider buying one and living in it? What are the pros and cons? To answer these questions we have to talk about what exactly a modular home is.

A modular home is a pre-constructed home that is built mostly in a factory at a fixed location. The parts of the house are constructed individually and then transported to the installation site where they're assembled like LEGO bricks, hence the term "modular." Usually, every part needed to build a house, from plumbing to wiring is included in the kit.

They're also called “prefabricated” or just “modulars”.

There are three main advantages to this type of construction:

1. Modular homes are built in factories, rather than on-site, which reduces time spent on construction and lengthy waiting periods.

2. They are very energy efficient, which means you save money on energy bills.

3. Modular homes are more durable than traditionally-built homes. Not only do they have extremely detailed drawings and design requirements, but they're also constructed to withstand transport.

These types of homes are ideal for those who dream of building their home, but want to avoid the potential headache, stress, and impatience.

Modular homes have been around since the 1940s, but only became popular in the U.S. a few decades ago. Today, there are over 25 manufacturers throughout North America and their market share has increased exponentially in the past 10 years.

It's safe to say, modular homes are here to stay.
